Air Intake & Ducting

Hello, i have just purchased a TF airbox, bracket and associated pipework to upgrade the intake side of the F, with the intention of adding a decent panel filter in the airbox. The resonator box has been consigned to the bin.

I have just made a duct for the left-hand side air vent to connect the airbox hose to. Some research has shown me that this will reduce the incoming air temperature significantly, but may also increase the engine bay temperature as no air from the left-hand duct will make it into the engine bay.

I have redesigned the duct, to also allow some air to pass through to the engine bay, however, I just wondered if anybody has ever created a duct to go underneath to direct some of the airflow. I know this is an area fraught with danger, and I don't want to impact the handling characteristics.

Yes many years ago before the TFs came along a chap called Tom (Randall? I can't recall) designed and sold a cold air scoop and I have one somewhere. If the ****** ******* F Register hadn't binned off without warning both of their huge readily searchable technical archives, I could have found you the details. If your curiosity and  patience demand, I can have a look without promise.
I do recall thinking about the trade off between cooling air removal from the engine surrounds and the limited benefit of cold air induction performance. There are safer ways to grab half a horse without risking the non removal of c.800l/minute of warm air from the engine compartment at tickover.

I found a wing mirror cover at the roadside & made a scoop out of that. Whether it makes a difference is a moot point. I abandoned the original pipe work, replacing it with convoluted tube, as used on blown air heater systems. A couple of ram pipe trumpets, off eBay, one right down in the vent, to take advantage of the scoop & the second, I brought up under the boot vent.
This is a recent addition & hasn’t been assessed dynamically.
Even if there is no advantage, it was a fun project.
I’m away, so no photo.

After a photo hunt on my phone,I found these.
Not in order, not shown to the best advantage & non of the “boot” inlet.
The top one might be in a low pressure zone, that has been taken into consideration but not implemented.

When I was working on a Mk1 F that had the restrictive 'resonator' box I disconnected the original arrangement, bought a 3d printed internal duct which fitted just inside the passenger side outer duct (from a past member Alec on here). Onto which I fitted a length of 63mm diameter flexible expanding hose (Amazon) which I ran to the airfilter assembly. This did away with both the resonator box and the original air intake tube behind the engine which picked up hot engine bay air. The simpler route and benefit of cold ouside air did make a slight performance improvement.
I bought a 2nd duct from Alec, before he left the forum, to put on my 135. No resonator box on this but the idea is still to replace the original air pickup at the rear of the engine with cold external air. I am supplementing this with a pair of outer scoops which I have bonded onto the original ducts. Having been caught up with other projects since I have only got around to fitting the drivers side, so feed to the engine bay cooling fan, so far. Although the passenger side scoop/ duct/ inner duct/ hose is made up this is still sitting in a drawer waiting for some elusive free time for me to fit it and connect onto the air filter.

I have a 3D printer and am looking to do the same thing, the difference being I have upgraded the F airbox to the TF, which is slightly bigger

If you are looking to buy a later air box, ie the dual feed unit, make sure you get the appropriate mounting bracket & the push in button. The original bracket can be modified but is it worth the bother?

I purchased the air box bracket and pipes, so I should be all good to go, I will eventually add the larger throttle body.

Hello Alec, it’s good to know you keep up with our transactions.
I thought about you a short while ago when that delivery clown tried the Broom Way as a short cut!
