I finally went and bought one! 1 year 6 months ago #200075

Hi all, ex Triumph Spitfire owner, I've been looking at buying a TF for many years but kept putting it off, finally went out and bought a 2003 Sprint.

So far sort of so good! A few issues I knew about which are fixable and I'm actually looking forward to sorting them and one, potentially nasty, issue that seems to have manifested since buying it and no, not the HG.

Welcome ex Spitfire owner, well the rear of a TF wont tuck in under cornering but too much wellie and you'll get the same result!!
So what's the nasty issue, the wife found out? we are all on tenterhooks

Haha! the wife found out ... lets just say she wasn't jumping for joy when she came home to find it parked next to my rusting campervan and my unused motorbike!

Bit of whine in 1st gear, a gearbox oil change has helped but not cured and a clutch related rattle, in neutral it stops when the peddle is depressed, the search function has given me a few pointers but as it all still works OK I think I need sort the blowing exhaust first ... at least I knew about that one when I bought it!

Which gearbox oil did you use?

Noisy clutch thrust bearings are neither unusual nor, usually much to worry about. As long as the clutch linkage into the box is good and free, it is unlikely to fail catastrophically.

Westway MTF94, seems to be some debate between this and others so I went for the oil that was "supposed" to be in there first, can always change it out if needed. The car didn't have much service history so better to have anything fresh in it than the dirty carp that came out when I drained it!

Clutch feels OK, biting point is at a good level, peddle sits a little high for my 6'1" liking but I suspect that's the way it is and nothing to do with the travel on the peddle. Gear shifts appear to be fine, hoping it'll stay the same until e/o 2023 and I'll think about doing something then!
