As to the removal/refitting.
I have had the dials pod in and out a few times now, and yes you can do it without taking off the steering wheel.

The outer cowl will pull out and then you can rotate it left to leave it hanging on the cables to the mirror switch and light potentiometer. Then you can release the instrument pod and pull it forward to access the plugs. with a bit of wriggling you will be able to slide it out around the steering wheel.

Has anyone found a way of illuminating the dials? David mentioned it in his excellent "How to" but I have not seen any posts about it recently. I like the dials but the black needles let it down.

I managed to fit the dials without removing the steering wheel. It was a bit of a squeeze but is do able, also I used small pieces of double side tape on the corners (out of sight) to hold them in place when re-fitting.

Hmm, the dials of the Citroen c5 that I have are illuminated, and that's from the light that illuminates the panel.

So could those be fitted somehow? Or the plastic be replaced with coloured Perspex like the citroen dials?

Personally I think that rover missed an opportunity to bring the display bang up to date in the TF, I like the way the clock and oil temp look when lit in the dark and surely that could have been done with the main dash too.

Illuminated needles is pretty simple as the Citroen shows, I'll post a pic later today as I can show it normally during the daytime, and another one tonight to show it all illuminated (may be poor quality depending on how the phone behaves in the light levels at the time)

I know how it was all put together as I had the infamous issue of the speedo not working when i first bought the car, so had to swap the stepper motors over which meant putting the needles back on.

Simple but effective.

Look forward to the pics Mal. :yesnod:

As for missed opportunities at rover.. there were more than a few. But, for a car of it's time, I'm just happy that it has a white-ish display. Many kept the black display for way too long. At least it can be modded to suit though. :)
