Mgf subframes against tf subframes 6 years 9 months ago #179413

Is it worth me doing, now I could simply take my old units off, tidy them up and put them back on,however the suspension is worn out on my one,and not being able to buy replacements, and the only update Rover didn't was the suspension the tf had.
I also plan to build this car once and enjoy it when I retire in 5 years time.
Now my wife isn't keen on loud exhausts or being subjected to g force on every bend .
So I have read you could get comfort springs,is this true.and if so where and what do they look like.

It's not quite a straight swap with the subframes, you have to cut smal (50mm)holes in the front inner wings.

The TF as standard has a much harder ride than an F! So maybe not the way to go to keep the good lady happy.
A functioning hydragas setup is a MUCH more comfortable ride than even a TF with the full COMFORT pack set up. Plus you would have to factor in the extra cost of the comfort springs and dampers on top of the TF subframes

Having been active in the search for alternatives to knackered hydragas, if I was you I would look to getting the hydragas units refurbished. There is a post by 'Blow in' on that very subject on the forum. The cost is less than a TF comfort pack as well.

I wish I had known about this refurb service before I wasted twice that much buying and struggling with the infamous SUPLEX spring in a can.

Swapping from F subs to TF subs is fundamentally straight forward but once you've sourced the actual subframes, refreshed everything and bought the TF500 shocks and springs for the comfort ride you'll have spent more than the £400 that it will cost to get the spheres refreshed.

The TF is naturally more sporty handling while the F is more of a GT car.

It gets more complicated as it goes along,I've studied a far bit about these cars,I have been offered a mgtf 160 mot failure and siezed clutch for a small sum of money.
Plan is to swap the subframes and all the suspension that is on it,engine and gearbox, engine wiring harness. The larger front brakes and the wheels.
Any bits of trim that is better then I have.then sell all the bits I no longer need,
So that will be all the mgf running gear, engine and gearbox,tf interior, roof and body panels.
I understand the 160 is different to a vvc, minor valve work .the gear box is different on a mpi to a vvc.and also the front wings are the same mgf and tf are the same shape.
I've also been told the 160 oil/water cooler can cause issues and to bypass it.so I'm still in a pickle.do I refurbish the car I have, and put a vvc head on it and wiring loom and hope to refurbish the suspension or put mgtf stuff in.
To be honest 0-60 as long as it's reasonable I'm happy,we work on some very fast modern cars.

Well after reading about the sphere refurbishment service I will keep my mgf as it was intended.Im a bit concerned that the tf suspension may not be to my wife's approval.I will refurbish the subframes and fit the clutch, and fit a vvc head on the block,we can at work reshim the liners to the correct level.
Clean her all up,so she is as good as new I guess.
I also think my boss will be happy that only one car is in bits rather then may be two cars.I also guess that it will be more of a collectors car if standard.
So I guess I can start almost straight away.
I will fit the larger brakes when the new tyres I have wear out,

I've regased several sets of hydragas spheres so far and I can sell you from personal experience that the ride of the F with regased spheres is fantastic! The guys that have installed regased spheres in their cars have said the same thing: it transforms the ride of the car. Definitely go the regased sphere route, you won't regret it.

Only a small thing but my car a TF160 which is 14yrs old has had no trouble with the oil cooler but on another hand , change the wheel bearing [ £13 ] as when mine have gone they have taken the hub with them [£55 ] Don't forget the grease nipples 4 on an F, 2 on a TF If you use the VVC head drill the oil ways in the head about mm extra which feed the VVC mechanism

Well I decided to build, restore a car a few months ago.mainly as one of the lads is rebuilding a mk1 escort,.I was planning to buy a rover 100,fit tf subframes, rear engine the car with a kv6.Then perhaps use Freelander IRD box and make it 4wd.But it would cost god know what plus time .I have seen on some forums so guys do so much to their cars they no longer resemble the car it started out as,and of course many projects never get finished.
So decided to plan and work out on paper,.but after speaking to you guys I will keep the mgf suspension, powder coat the subframes and any other rusty metal I find.
Fit some standard shocks, zinc coated bolts on everything,
Engine wise simply make it a vvc, mild sports exhaust will need advise on that please.
Will under wax the inner wings and underside when she is a bear shell.
The carpet and leather is spot on,however will get it all treated and cleaned.
I guess the whole sum will be around £1000 for what I hope is a car that looks almost new.
Will have new service items, shocks, clutch, brakes, belts etc.
