Despite a good battery, the remote unlocking on my MGF has a very limited range. Do you think this will help?

You need to take the passenger footwell cover off, find the skinny yellow wire, unwind it and tape it extended under the dash. That helps a bit!

I found the new battery helped but ten feet is about the limit.Yes holding it against your head does work Richard :yesnod:

Thanks for the tip Adam :broon: A little job for the future.

Goodness knows why they put a decent aerial on it then wound it up!

Holding under your chin is apparently the favored way to extend the range.

Mine seems to work OK from @ 25 - 30ft.
I dunno if the aerial wire has been unwound though.

You may have a different frequency of key fob in OZ as different country's assign or allow different bandwidths for radio transmissions, in the uk the MG Rover Pektron fob is 433 mhz. which in my case equates to about 2 mts max.

Not sure about the aerial wire on the Pektron unit; or if it's the same as the Lucas A5 but your 30' range would be nice.

Yeah, now that you mention it, we do use a different frequency. 315 MHz :yesnod:

My range is very poor and I would like to try and improve it.

Apparently the aerial is a yellow cable taped to the loom behind the passenger footwell triangular cover and is tuned to a 1/4 wavelength.

Just has a look on a radio HAM site and it says to find the full wave length divide the frequency of the transmitter (433mhz) by the speed of light in meters per second (299,792,458 m/s) and you get the wave length in meters, so it should be:

300/433= 0.6928406467 meters divide by 4 for 1/4 wavelength =0.1732101617 so the cable should be 173mm, I am going to have a look over the weekend and extend it to 1/2 wavelength (346mm) and see if it is improved.

Forehead/mouth closed works well.

They have a restricted range to reduce the change of an unintended unlock event going un-noticed.
