For sale TF 160 VVC Engine.

This engine was purchased a few months ago from a specialist supplier having had a new head gasket, stretch bolts, water pump and timing belt fitted. The engine is still in the car I'm breaking (most parts available) and can be seen running. The engine runs great, no overheating and revs strong all the way to over 7000rpm.

A new clutch pressure plate and thrust bearing were fitted and are also available.

Any reasonable offer considered.

I like to be transparent with people and for any T-Bar member I will always look at the lowest buy it now completed sold price on ebay for a comparable condition item and then knock something off that, so anyone on here will be sure they are getting an accurately described item at a very competitive price. I also charge postage and packing at cost, to date, I have even undercharged a couple of items on P&P.

I also have many items advertised on Gumtree (which is a great place to sell your unwanted bits) and anyone buying on there does not get them at these reduced rates.

A little more history behind this engine;

The engine was purchased by two MG enthusiasts (one of whom is a member on here and the F Register) who bought the TF 160 as a project as the original engine was making a racket and would not go into gear properly. They paid £500 for the bare engine from an MG supplier who told them it was from a car which had done 44,000 miles (just block and head, no inlet /outlet manifolds, alternator, oil cooler, etc, etc, these they took off the original car and fitted to the new engine).
The engine was supplied to them with a new head gasket, stretch bolts water pump, timing belt, etc. Since they purchased the engine and fitted it, along with a new clutch and pressure plate, the car has done no more than about 20 miles or so.

The engine is still in the car and can be seen running. I was going to do the upgrade to my 1.8Mpi but I realistically don't think I will get the time (was hoping to do it over summer but 'life' got in the way). I had the engine running for over an hour and it sounded great, revving freely to over 7000 rpm, to be sure that the engine had no issues before I began the swap. Another T-Bar member who had been in the car with this engine in said it was very strong and fast.

As this is a fully functioning engine which has just had all new gaskets, timing belt, water pump and tensioner fitted (Kit worth £100+++) and the cheapest I see them on ebay is £350+ (used straight out of crashed or MOT failure cars without new head gaskets, etc) I am not going to give this engine away.

I see no point in selling one bit, say the block alone or the head alone.

I would consider selling the head/block without all the ancillaries to reduce the cost to someone with an existing 160 but please take into account all the above info and if you wish to take it further pm me and I will happily supply my phone number and we can discuss it further.

Any reasonable offer considered.

I guess you don't want to sell me the engine? Your lack of reply to my last PM suggests that is the case. So lets discuss it in a more public forum.

I am not some dreamer with no money to pay, I have cash waiting and want a good 160 engine to fit into one of my two MGF Trophy's. I only need a head but will take the full block / head combo as it is more convenient for us both that way.

Just need a price from the seller, which I don't think is an unreasonable request?

My first offer was a low one, but that's business. Just as you don't want to let it go for nothing, I don't want to pay more than I have to. Having had no indication of price from you it was always going to be a low offer.

So I ask again for the final time, what price will you accept for the engine? I will arrange transport assuming you will remove it and palletise.

Thanks
Steve

I believe my previous post gave plenty of indications of price range. I have only ever asked for reasonable offers and you offered a lot less than 50% of the going rate. In fact most 1.8 K-Series blocks alone without the head sell for more than you offered!

In reply to your offer I explained my viewpoint, which I expanded upon above. As I also previously explained to you I fully understand that you just want a head and felt that unfortunately I didn't think we could get close enough to do a deal this time and wished you all the best and good luck in locating a good head.

As per my above post

You decided you would ignore that last bit and make your post.

Good luck in finding a good replacement head.

Hi Paul,

I'm interested in the engine, would you be able to hold onto it for a couple of months until I've moved to a new place with a garage?

Cheers,

Oliver

Hi Oliver,

Good to hear from you again, was really nice meeting you. How did you get on with the TT?.

I have had quite a bit of interest from people on Gumtree and have had a couple of people text me today with one phoning tonight who is after the complete rear sub frame/gearbox/engine/ECU/wiring loom/suspension/brakes.

I would like to get the TF out of the way to make space for another car as my parking space is limited. I have been busy on Gumtree selling those useful items I've held on to for so long and the mountain of building tools I had from running my own business as I have plans for part of the garage space.

If it's ok with you I'll see how I get on this weekend and if it's still available I'll contact you next week and we can see if we can come to some arrangement.

Paul

Thanks, it was good to meet you too! I'm sad to say that the TT is still to be fitted. About a fortnight after I picked it up from you (where I also spent a few hundred at MGFnTFBITZ) I noticed a large coolant loss (nearly the whole expansion tank). I was about to start a new job where I needed to commute around 50 miles a day so I decided to SORN the car and get something temporary (RS Clio 182). Well nearly a year on and I'm still working on it! I keep noticing bits which require attention so get side tracked... Life has also got in the way as I got married six months ago, fitted a new kitchen/redecorating the house ready to move and am preparing for life as a dad with a little one on the way in March next year. Busy times but I try to spend at least a few hours each week on the car.

I suspect my car may have suffered a head gasket failure (need to do a combustion leak test to confirm) so figured why not spend the money on a Trophy 160 engine instead.

I understand your reasons, good luck with the sale. If nothing materialises then like you say we can see if we can come to an arrangement next week :-)

Cheers,

Oliver
