I have been looking around and see so many different combinations of exhausts and air filters, I have recently fitted the XPOWER back box and want to finish it off with a decent air filter/ induction set up.
Hi
That question opens a can of worms I think a K&N cone filter is the best buy as induction filters cost £250+ for little gain in bhp/torque and a K&N panel filter at £38 is the best buy £ per bhp spent.

I have heard all sorts about heat soak from open cone systems, and that sticking to the panel is the the best. I have also seen the viper piper cross which I believe is an enclosed cone with a pipe down to the side vents, is this beneficial??
For cars with the better airbox system(ie Mk2 Fs and TFs) then best bang for your buck is to fit a good quality panel filter. Then reroute the air feeds to the nearside air intake.
If you want induction noise as well as efficiency and can afford it, then an enclosed cone filter such as the Pipercross Venom is the way to go
I have done this to mine and I like it after looking at price of the enclosed system. The sound is great. With the 52mm throttle body its really really great. I have kept the original box so can go back to standard when I wish.
My setup is similar to Davem's except that I've got a Pipercross PK091 cone (£50 from David Manners as opposed to £100 from ebay sellers!).
I've left the bottom of the original filter box in place and positioned the cone as close to that as I could get it. I had thought about taking it out and running some ducting from the side vent but haven't bothered, yet.
It certainly sounds good, especially with the 52mm throttle body.
Does it provide any significant performance improvement - don't know tbh. It feels like it but it's hard to tell.
