Thanks for that information. As for the car I'll leave that decision until I've finshed with the cooling system. Although truth be told that decision might not be mine. Having 3 mg's sitting in my driveway hasn't gone unnoticed by my other half.

Hi deepfat thanks for the reply. The coolant constantly flows from the small pipe at the side of the expansion tank. I'll investigate the jiggle valve once i find out what and where it is. As for the compression test the first results were all over the place but i hadn't done one before so i did them again ( hopefully correctly this time ) they came back as 175 on 2 and 177 on the other 2. I had also done 3 chemical tests over the last week and all came back negative. This morning I removed the thermostat housing and changed the thermostat. There was a small leak from the housing so it wasn't a wasted morning. I had done a compression test on the expansion tank, over a 6 hour period the psi had dropped just under 2. Hopefully the small leak explains that.

A couple of week ago i purchased an F which was advertised as head gasket blown. Intention was to use it for spares for my F and TF. Having examined it and done a few tests it appears not to have a blown head gasket. Last week i could hear the fan running when i switched the engine off after running up to operating temperature. This week when trying to get it up to temperature ( to run an engine compression test ) it won't fully reach operating temperature the fan doesn't come on and the coolant is constantly circulating. I'm thinking thermostat issue. Am i missing anything else ?

  • Like talkingcars I'm in the middle of fitting a Mike Satur rear repair panel. Not a perfect fit but close. Little work needed to get a good fit. I'm doing all the cutting and fitting then my youngest will take over and do the welding.

  • Staring sadly at it sitting with a blown head gasket...

Sorry to here about the head gasket David. That's everybody's worst nightmare. A colleague at work, who knows I have an F, shouts "blown head gasket" every time  walk past him. Next time he does it I'll bag and tag him and post him somewhere remote.

  • Hi talkingcars.
On removing the steering rack it was clearly worn. The inner joints just were sliding back and forward with no effort. Truth be told I could feel it in the steering when I drove it back from Yorkshire at the end of last year. I found a new one for just over £100 so it was a no brainer to change it.

  • Just started another job on my F. MOT tester had noted body filler on the n/s sill. Worrying about what I would find I made a start on removing it this afternoon. Turns out that previous work on the sill had been body filled on rather than welded. Who does something like that and secondly who allows it to pass an MOT like that
