Before you can remove the timing belt you need to remove the lower crank pulley..

To do this you need to lock the flywheel, hence the reason for removing the starter motor.

Chris, is this derived from the G Series (Galileo) Common rail diesel engine, developed from the L Series engine, that was earmarked by MG Rover for, amongst others, to go in to the MG ZR in 2005/6?

The engine is currently made in India and used in the Indian ICML Rhino and the General Motors Tavera.

Or is it to do with something beginning with W, as Bryan said?

If you Google search Sonalika engine in the images you will see the same picture.
