Sorry, I mis-read the question as in what MG or BMC car did it first appear.

Sorry for the late reply (had to pop out...) as far as I'm concerned Martin's comprehensive answer is excellent, ...... however I didn't specify which make of car it first appeared .... and therefore our Cumbrian administrator is correct IMO ...

Well done David (and nice pic too!)

over to you sir ...

Ok, feel free to delete this one if David pops in, but a quick question.

The Ewings were famous in the Dallas soap opera, but can you link the Ewing name to a well known MG enthusiast and MGCC official in the Southern Hemisphere?

That would have to be (pictured on the right) the National Chairman, Mr Norman Ewing, MGCC of South Africa

I was thinking the link was MGF with dim headlamps and a boiling engine but is it this?
MG Car Club Picnic

Sunday June 3, 2012, 11:30 AM til? Powder Horn Lodge in Powder Mills Park off Route 96 in the Town of Perinton. The Club will provide Coffee and Charcoal for grilling, so bring your picnic meal and a dish to pass.
Held for 40 years?

That's about the best I can come up with.

 Good try Martin and an interesting answer, it is, however, far simpler though.

Like the old catch phrase show host said 'Say what you see' :broon:
