I'll never understand the Pomgolian obsession with damned tea. .....

I don't drink tea and a hoist pulls something up.....

.

a hoist pulls something up.....

The old expression form Shakespeare: “Hoist with he’s own petard” begs to differ, a petard is a form of bomb, to be more precise, an explosive device used to breach a fortification. If it were to hoist up it’s owner it would lift him by the explosive force of it’s premature detonation, not pull him up by a rope!

Early 2 and 4 post car hoists used an internal system of cables and pulleys to hoist the car into the air ( bloody awful dangerous things) then some used roller chains ( not quite as dangerous but still awful) modern car hoists use screw shafts.

A lot of my working life has been spent working on and/ or under hoists including hoists designed to raise an entire train and here in the civilised world (Oz) they are always called hoists! :bust:

Whereas on the other hand, here a lift is a device used to vertically transfer personnel and or goods within a shaft intergrated into a structure…..what you would call a elevator.
These do use cables to pull up the load. Hydraulically actuated cables for low rise and winched cables for medium and high rise.
Spent a a fair chunk of my life installing those bloody things too!

So basically all any of this proves is that we are people divided by a common language! 🤣

OK so I've actually given up. Short of replacing the rear of the car I'm at my wits end. Went round and tied up every possible loose thing including the silly air intake duct which just seems to randomly dangle. No luck. Booked it into a tf specialist and told them to keep the damn thing until they have fixed the noise. It's such fun to drive but the incessant klonk or clunck is worrying and intolerable. I'll report back and tell you. And yes I have checked the boot for a loose tyre lever. Thanks for everyone's suggestions. As it happens I knew about the petard. But hoists scare me. I think I'm going to dig an inspection pit. If the car doesn't work I'll just make the pit a bit bigger and bury the damn thing.

Pits worry me more, flumes can collect in them, asphyxiating anyone in ‘em……..or worse, like one poor bugger I knew, he was working in a pit at a large Ford dealership that had a massive 6 car pit, basically a bloody big hole covered with steel checker plate that had openings across it to work on the cars. Each of these bays had an oil drainage system, pneumatic jacks etc.
One of the other mechanics had a fuel spillage in to the pit, and this poor bastard was working in there when it ignited, he ended up a crispy critter who lived to tell the tale!

Another safety hazard with pits is when they don’t have a car sitting on ‘em, is that they’re a bloody big hole that you can accidentally step into!

Are you a member of Kent MGF/TF Car Club? They have lots of members. Maybe one of them could be helpful. There is a garage associated with them, I believe, called Autospot MG https://www.autospotmg.com/

Thanks for this - I'm a member of the MG and Sprite club but I'm not sure how many tf owners there are. I've got a 65 Sprite so I will have to consider what club to be in
