Re:ABS Testing 3 years 8 months ago #193865

The sig gens work well, and they have the same plug fitting as the scope, so the same PSU can be used. Its not very clear which way the electrolytic capacitors are fitted on the board, I think if I remember correctly the -ve leg goes to the shaded part on the circuit board mimic. Use a google search photo just to make sure. Also when soldering the potentiometers, they have to be seated as close to the PCB as possible or the knob will foul on the box lid.

I will be checking the wheel bearings when I do the discs. I have ordered some new stake nuts for them.

Love the Chinese lol the board or schematic should be marked.

Re the bearing, the one I changed seemed ok. It’s the magnetic ring that had deteriorated. I was very sceptical with the advice, if you do change it though it’s easiest to change the full hub assembly, but stay clear from cheap eBay set ups, either get a good low mile used part, or use rimmers dmgrs or brown and gammons

Well the scope tells me there are no faulty signals from the reluctors, so I am thinking its time to look elsewhere. I have a mate who is very local and breaks 75s and ZT's he is a goldmine of parts and usually has in any spares I need. He also does carry a few new bits in stock too...he found a new lower engine mount for a tenner for me and when I needed some injectors, he was just throwing a couple of V6 engines away, so he told me to help myself. Got a few spare rails, seals and injectors. Top man!

I will be replacing the rear discs and pads tomorrow, so will check the rear bearings out at the same time.

Fingers crossed, who’s your mate?

My mate is a guy called David Bourne he is based in Staffordshire near to Uttoxeter. He was breaking a few ZT's and 75s last time I went up for bits, although he is finding them rarer to acquire now. He has a good selection of bits about him. I will be calling on him tomorrow as he has some nice nearly new tyres he is selling me.

I replaced the rear discs today and also fitted new pads and shoes and clocked the old discs, one was running 0.2mm out, which I thought was a bit on the high side, new discs are all running at under 0.1 mm now. Not as good as my TF but I think they will be ok at that.

I also removed the rear hubs and cleaned the ABS sensors and reluctor rings. Re fitting the hubs I managed to get one of the bearings to tighten up a little more as shown by the position of the dent in the stake nut. I had to re use the nuts temporarily as my replacements had not arrived. I did not swap them, as I rebuilt each side before stripping the other side down. New nuts will be fitted asap.

I know this is a F and TF forum, but some of this info about the ABS signalling is relevant to our cars so I am hoping that some peeps are getting some useful data from my quest to clear up my ZT's ABS issue.

I have not yet test driven the car yet, as it was getting on, so will see if there is an improvement tomorrow. The handbrake certainly is felling a lot more useful even without bedding it in!

By the way, just noticed, this is my 1000th post on the T-bar, wow! I hope I have made the forum a better place!

Think I’ve met Dave or bought something from him years ago. I’ve had my 75 contemporary se for over 8 years love it. That bearing looks like the one I took of my old Connie.
What are the back plates like? It might be worth changing them while your at it.

Back plates are good, I replaced them a couple of years ago..the bearing is ok, no play at all. If they do need changing they are so much easier than doing a TF!
David Bourne is a nice guy, just sometimes can be a bit hard to get hold of....He doesn't charge a lot for his spares either.

Well I am pleased to announce that after road testing the ZT today, quite a few miles too, the brakes and in particular the ABS are all working fine. Looks like the new discs solved the problem, however cleaning the reluctor ring may have contributed.

Now looking forward to getting my TF back in the middle of next week as its currently in the paintshop having the rust spots sandblasted and new paint where required, just about every panel actually! Hopefully then I can get around to fitting my new front splitter and a freshly painted slam panel. Then maybe after that its a re-stripe.
