Re:Re:Engine Management Light 4 years 3 months ago #192124

A sold engine management light (EML) shows that the ECU has seen a situation likely to give rise to high emissions. A flashing EML shows that the ECU has seen a situation that can cause damage, probably to the cat.

On the Rovers and MGs a solid EML will clear after 5 complete ignition cycles after the fault has gone.

A cheap OBD2 reader will clear a EML and read generic codes on compliant cars which is any with a MEMS 3 ECU. It won't access anything beyond the OBD2 area. A www.pscan.uk will read earlier cars and will read other areas on all car.

I decided to take the MG to my son's at Winchester this christmas anyway. I started it up and the EML went out, but 5 seconds later it came on again. Anyway, i drove to a friends to deliver a present and then when i set off again the light went out and stayed out! 350 miles later it remains off so i'm assuming i now have the world's only self fixing TF.

Hope every one had a good christmas

Could have been an O2 sensor needing a good run to clear it off....

My ZS has one that is borderline. If I use the car a lot it's fine, less and it throws a fit after a week or so of short runs.

……...so i'm assuming i now have the world's only self fixing TF.

The EML stops illuminating after 5 complete ignition cycles after the perceived fault was last noted.

A perceived fault is one that would cause the emisions to be out of spec.

Sorry talking cars; i wasn't ignoring what you said before; but surely if the perceived fault was still there it would have just set the light off again, on the sixth start? or is that not how it works? As you may have realised this is slightly outside my area of expertise. Although to be fair after 63 years i'm still yet to find "my area of expertise". I hope it comes soon or i won't have long to use it!

Don't worry, I realised after I posted yesterday I had already posted.

If the fault is still there the light won't go out, it only goes out 5 cycles AFTER the fault has gone, or if cleared with a OBD reader.
