I have my TF booked in at what used to be a MG Rover dealership. Apparently they have 3 mechanics still there from the MG days. Its a Honda dealership now incidentally. I was on the phone to the service manager about my car and he seemed genuinely pleased to be getting the TF in for work. It was pretty obvious he knew about the car as he was saying things that all my research has taught me about the car, ie dropping subframe for wishbones and bolts snapping and being able to reuse the crank pully bolt after cam belt change etc. I really like this personal touch when it come to my car, I've found in the past you can't get past the receptionist at some garages to actually speak to the mechanics about your car. I can do a some jobs myself like brakes and suspension but this cambelt i think needs to go to the experts. service history shows only 2,000 miles since it was done last but that was 5 years ago. It looks as if my oil cooler pipes need replacing but that dreaded allen bolt that the subframe blocks needs the engine lowering a bit which probably puts this job out of my skill range :-( annoying as other than that it looks fairly straight forward. Pleased to have MG TF experts local to me though, even though they take all my money.

Good to find a local expert if you dont fancy the work yourself.
Usually you can bank on the mobile MG mechanics to be considerably cheaper than local garages though, and they do carry or can get hold of most parts fast.
Always worth a phone call to get a quote, may save you a few quid.

Hope the repair goes well....

yes -I agree with Sundance on this-there is some very good MG-ROVER trained mobile engineers out there I have used their services myself for cam belt work. You usually get a fixed price quote and done in your driveway.

Jon Norris travels as far out a Spain and he is based in the North East, so Scotland should be do-able...although he would charge a little bit for fuel and travel time...
See how your local garage goes on...if they are cheap enough and know the cars then I am sure they will do a good job.

The ex MG Rover garage has quoted me £320 to do my cam belt change including water pump (mines the vvc), and that's without the parts as I'm purchasing the kit from MG and Alfa spares for £85 so just over 400 for the job. Im reluctant to drive it just now until the job is done though for obvious reasons.

As above contact one of the Mg mobile specialists, I can recommend Jon and Claire Norris from Rough Luck Racing. They pulled me out of a hole last year.

That is a good price, and close to what the mobiles will charge, I'd go with it.

Home to black Alfa Romeo 159 3.2 V6 Q4 ,green MGF VVC and red MG Maestro T16.

It's booked in James. I'll definitely use these guys for the jobs beyond my capabilities. Glad you think its a reasonable price as i wasn't sure.
