Having become the new owner of a 51 plate F, I am still getting used to some of the cars "quirks"! In any other car if I open the dash vents I get a stream of cool (well ambient) air, but in the F I have to have the blower on to get any air. Is this normal?

Yes. That's normal unfortunately.

You can change the airbox under the bonnet for a TF snorkel type or open up the F airbox to improve air flow. I opened up the F box and fitted a couple of extra vents. It did help but it still isn't up to modern car standards.

TBH, I don't know if the TF has better air flow.

That's the same as my F and is pretty standard I believe. People have tried ingenious solutions including running a hose from the front of the car to the air intake. Have a look in the How To section.

I have a snorkel intake fitted from a TF but it doesn't seem to help much with the air flow TBH.
