Fitting second ciggy lighter - help please 7 years 5 months ago #173708

I would like to fit a second ciggy lighter to use to power a Sat Nav, I have one of those temp and volt meter gadgets in the original.

I am going to mount it under the dash board.......but being a bit of a technical numpty would like some advise where to pick up the power from. How easy is it to get the power from the fuse box or is it easier to tap into the power from the original ciggy lighter?

Any help and pointers would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

Sorry Guys should of looked first, found the excellent How To guide produced by CJJ........Thanks.

I fitted a second one in the passenger side out of the way to power the satnav , the wires got in the way using the original one.

I wired them both together, and fed them from a permanenly live supply on the fuse box, so I didn't have to turn the ignition on to use them.

I would run the second one in parallel with the first one.

Home to black Alfa Romeo 159 3.2 V6 Q4 ,green MGF VVC and red MG Maestro T16.

I put my volt meter on the instrument surround:

Then put dual USB (2.1 amp and 1 amp) in the ciggy lighter hole:

This was my solution, the device gives me two USB ports for satnav/mobile phone etc..
Wired in parallel with the lighter socket.

If you put it in the same place as mine there is 'just' enough space for the connectors without any bending needed.... and luckily it is central in that position!
