I've bought a new wiper motor for the F, it's for a Freelander 1(cost the same as a second hand MGF motor) and I believed that it was just necessary to swap the new motor plug for the old one.
I swapped the plug over, encouragingly the wire colours were even the same.



HOWEVER

The motor works perfectly on all settings when I plug it in (isolated from the car body)...except the motor casing and the arms are live! Meaning that as soon as I try to install it, the fuse blows, obviously.

The wiring is blue, red and black to the motor, and there are also green and brown wires.
The red, black and blue wires go to the motor in both new and old motor.

There is a difference with the new motor setup (It only has one rotary switch self parking mechanism) with green and brown wires coming from it. See above photo

On the old motor there seem to be two rotary switches green wire goes to one, brown wire goes to the other. Black wires return from the 'green' switch. One black returned to the plug; one looped to join the black wire coming out of the motor.



I would like some knowledgeable chappie to tell me what connects where!

There has to be something wrong with the internals if the casing is live, Shame you can't send it back after hacking the plug off.

From everything I've read it should be a straight swap after the plug change. If you have no joy/answers in a couple of days I should get mine through the post and could help you out with a picture comparison

Link doesn't work. Clive but I've found a circuit diagram for the freelander to compare with the original.


MGF

Looking at the diagram you need to swap the black and the green.

On the MGF the green is the earth and black the supply.

and all the cables are the same, apart from the black and the light green.

In the Freelander the LightGreen is a supply from the fusebox, whereas in the MGF it is the earth.

In the Freelander the Black is the earth, whereas in the MGF it is the supply from the fusebox.

Do you have plenty of fuses?

Also, from your diagrams, the MGF one has a 1Amp motor with a resistor from the red, whereas the Freelander has a 10Amp motor with no resistor on the red.

I would be getting a meter out on the motor and comparing resistances on each cable to earth.

I just did mine, I left old connector on loom and put on spade connectors on new wiper wires as they fit plug. Wires from new wiper go to top left black, top right brown, bottom left blue, middle red and bottom right green. Hope this helps.

The problem highlighted. Black from the motor connects to green on the loom. Green from the motor switch connects to black in the loom.

Finally, as an example of World Class Pedantry: DC circuits are actually positive and negative, whilst live and neutral are AC notations. So, in a car, you would not have a live feed but a positive one. I am also braced for arguments regarding conventional versus actual DC current flow! Bring it on. I need to get out more....

And Bongo: we still use Avo meters: I still have one in its leather case!

I too have an Avo in its leather case, inherited from Sheila's dad.

And I agree with your pedantry but using 'live' in a negative earth car world, explained the problem, I thought.
