Hi Y'all! 2 years 5 months ago #197436

Good evening everyone,

I'm Andy, 38 year old aircraft engineer living in Dorset and have just decided to take the plunge and buy an MG TF (which should arrive on Monday) as a bit of a project! Known HGF, but I'm ready to get torn right in and looking forward to picking everyone's brains.

Cheers

Andy

Hi all and thanks for the warm welcome!

She finally arrived last night... bit rough around the edges, but nothing I don't think I can deal with...

If anyone is able to help me out with a bit of history (aside from the usual MOT online history type stuff) it would be great to hear!

Take care

Andy

Unless you are certain that the head gasket has failed it is probably a good idea to do some checks before ripping it apart. It is not unknown for a simple pressure cap failure to be diagnosed as HGF.

As for history, there is a very nice guy called Adrian Clifford who has been working on creating a complete database for the MGF/TF. By way of an incentive, he produces rather nice 'Heritage Certificates' free of charge if you provide him with some basic information. Search on this forum for more information or look him up on Facebook - Essex MG’s.

Thanks Bruce,

The only info I've been given is that the RAC diagnosed HGF... I've had a quick look and the oil on the dipstick appears a bit milky and there is clearly emulsification inside the expansion tank... from past experience I would consider this a given, but equally I had a Freelander (v6 not 1.8L K) which was diagnosed with HGF but in the end turned out to be nothing more than the oil cooler leaking internally... so I am more than willing to bow down to the MG wisdom of the forum!

Thanks for the tip... I'll look Adrian up!

Cheers

Andy
