  • Bonjour, Problem mostly solved. Bad connection of a multi plug buried behind the ECM.
The engine turns over quite sweetly except for a tap or click which follows the revs.

Also, the rev counter doesn't work. Coolant, temp, oil pressure all work. Haven't moved so don't know about the speedo.

I see something about an instrument pack. That sounds complicated.

  • Thank you all. I'm looking at wiring diagrams and will do some simple checks myself. Also trying to find an auto electrician who might know an MG

  • The wire which connects by spade connecter is supposed to engage the solenoid when the key is turned. I connected this wire to a meter and the meter to earth. No current when turning the key. The wire disappears into a bundle which goes to the engine management system. This out of my depth. MGFs and their owners are few in Brittany.

  • Are we talking about the black covered cable connected below the solenoid? It feels tight and well connected.

Bonjour, After several months it has taken me to change the engine in my 1998 MGF, I am ready to start up.

Colant systel full and bled, oil and filter added.

It was suggested that I remove plugs and give short runs until oil pressure was obtained.

First problem was the key fobs . After battery changes and following the handbook re-registering, they work fine.

But the starter key does nothing. I have tried pressing the fob buttons after fitting the key. Everything else works, lights, doors.

What should I try and check first? I don't have a code reader. I feel quite useless.

  • Thank you for your suggestions. I'm sure you are right about the coolant level. I installed a new coolant tank with a warning system some years ago. The corrugated tube in the second photo goes off to the tank but (my age is telling) I cannot remember the connections and can't find the fitting instructions.I attach a slightly better photo which shows the green yellow cable encased in a simple tubing which I am fairly sure I didn't install. I'tried to photo everything before dismantling which took place over a year ago have missed out this wiring. I don't know what the black box in the photo is for even thogh 4 wires connect into it.

Bonjour, almost completed my engine change in my 1998 MGf. Thought I had tagged everything but!Seeputo showing 2 connectors on one line above the gearbox. They go off to a small box shown on second photo which seems to connect to several things including the loss of coolant wire. Can anyone tell me what they should connect to.

  • Thank you. I think I have a bad diagram. Some of the original pieces are not available. it seems better to change to the PRT layout as most pieces are available except a 'Y' piece PEV000010.
However I cannot find a diagram for the PRT set up. One thing I don't follow is what does the thin pipe along the top of the inlet manifold do.

Bonjour, Tucked away in France I am struggling with the cooling hoses for the engine in my 1998 MGF.After several disasters with the head gasket I have installed a "remanufactered" engine from Ivor Searle. The engine is in place, most of the bits fitted and the body dropped. I thought it might be a good idea to change the hoses throughout. The hose most suspect was the return from the engine which had a moulded joint. This apparently has failed on other cars and my original hoses are 23 years old. There is a modified hose which uses a plastic connector. On the diagram below the hose is no. 16. this has a branch which should connect to the heater return pipe. No. 16 is 30 mm diam., no. 22 is 20 mm diam. They are supposed to connect by the adaptor no. 19 which is 20 mm each end. On the diagram it appears to have different diameter ends. The fitting 19 is listed as MG Rover 061282. I have it but it is 20 mm by 20mm. What have I got wrong???? There is no sraightforward explainations on any of the normal suppliers
