  • I have signed that but it's not gained much traction in the wider community. I think it much more likely that the government (any flavour) here will seek to copy the draft EU legislation covering 'End of Life' (ELV) and 'Residual' vehicles. This is legislation dressed up in environmental clothes that seeks to remove older 'less green' vehicles from the roads and make sure we all have to drive shiny new non-ICE vehicles. What it actually means is that they create aa artificially inflated (for those who can afford it) new market for volume vehicle manufacturers. My word, they can't have us all adopting the actual environmentally beneficial idea of not buying new stuff all the time and fixing or repairing older cars.

    https://environment.ec.europa.eu/topics/waste-and-recycling/end-life-vehicles_en

At first, glance, the proposed legislation seems innocuous enough but the definitions make some woolly statements adaptable to almost anything. Under the definition of ELV is this sentence: Another criterion is linked to the fact that a vehicle cannot be economically reparable, i.e. that its market value is lower than the costs of the necessary repairs to restore it in a way that it can obtain a roadworthiness certificate in the Member State where it was registered.

That suggests that anything that is a economic write-off (easy for our vehicles) would not be allowed repair and must instead be deemed ELV and scrapped. There is some stuff about parts being removed for use in the repair of other vehicles but this also talks about those being traceable and controlled, meaning it will fall within the purview of specific dismantlers and not the hobbyist and you just know it will increase costs.

Although this is all relevant to the EU, I would not be at all surprised if this idea rears it's head in our parliament in the very near future. It is a market creator dressed up in fake environmental jargon.

I did also notice that you said you didn't want to spend more than the car is worth earlier. That's always been a bit of false equivalence as the monetary value of the car isn't necessarily related to what it's value is to you. If you enjoy the car and it helps you do what you want to do, in a way that gives you enjoyment, then isn't that a better comparison to decide if something is worth it? While it would be daft to spend more than needed, trying to make the sums add up all the time will result in abject failure; if that were the overriding factor, none of us would drive these things at all probably.

Glad you got good results from mgfntfbitz; I don't know of anyone who has been let down by them, absolutely straight-up folks. You are definitely in the right place for advice here as the experience on offer will help you avoid the false economies too.

  • Don't forget that offer I made about the free hardtop in Cambs. It's still here and I will almost certainly hang on to it until summer at least.

  • I believe that is the case.. for a given value of 'fit'.

Fettling is normally required, guides for which are here on the 'How to' section.

  • I took the soft-top off for a good dry-out and clean and put the hardtop on the other day. Also replaced the gaskets on the rear lights to see if that helps prevent more damp on the boot floor. I think I skim read a post while searching something else that suggested there was another couple of seal areas to fettle if there was water getting in - does anyone have that info to hand?

  • Hello and welcome Hans, sounds like you've got yourself one that's been well cared for and you should have some great fun with it. None of the others you listed have ever floated my boat but then I'm biased. There's a great community that goes along with having the octagon badge and there is an absolute wealth of expertise right here.

  • Equipment limitations, I get you and while I understand your desire to come up with a solution yourself, I'm afraid I don't have any info about what may be a suitable disc. I can't even recall a place that might have a searchable index of that type of thing. If I was after computer stuff and looking for a graphics card that would fit a small case then a site like Skinflint.co.uk would be ideal but I checked and they haven't got anything about car brake discs.

Given the massive cost of kits by comparison, maybe a local engineering firm could still undertake the job I described at a fraction of the amount of a new setup?

  • The thing that occurs to me is that if you have the ability to have extra holes drilled into a disc properly (from an engineering perspective regarding heating etc) could you not just have some of the 304mm discs from the 160 or special editions just machined down to 280mm?

  • If the glass is in the raised position, it shouldn't be in the way, unless I'm misunderstanding your comment? You will have the metal cantilever in the door space but that shouldn't be a huge obstacle. Even if you were to remove the glass, the motor is still bolted to the inside face of the door so will likely restrict access as well.

When I did replace the whole motor and lever section, I raised the glass, popped in a couple of wooden door wedges to hold the window and swapped the whole lot out pretty easily. When I refit the new one, I made sure to line up the bolts with the left over impressions on the brackets.

I put a copious amount of Dynax S50 on the inside of mine while I was in there too, for adding sound deadening, you could see about adding some on the reverse of the actual door card too? That way, you can test and adjust by popping it on and off as needed.

  • The last few days have seen me reinstall a glass screen into my hardtop; one with intact heating element connectors. That was a lovely job involving physically wrestling the screen and seal into the frame while getting a copious amount of sealant over myself. I know they didn't use sealant originally but given the age of the rubber, I decided adding some was a prudent move. I think I've spent more time cleaning everything with panel wipe than I did getting the thing in. Still, next is putting in the retrimmed headliner biscuit so it's on the home stretch. The tricky part will be getting it on the car and fiddling to adjust the thing for best fit.
