Just wondered what the average life of a plug is for the F/TF?

I've just fixed a miss-fire caused by what turned out to be a duff plug with 21500 on the clock. Not sure whether its original - it's an 'NLP' - but it does look like a platinum-tip-type which I thought were good for about 60,000 miles.

I've not had to replace a faulty plug in years - a Suzuki I had turned well over 100,000 on the originals - so was a little surprised by the price... they were 4/11d each for my old Austin A30!

When the F was launched MG said that the engine cover would only have to come off at 60 000 miles so that the plugs could be changed. I would be very surprised if more than a handful achieved this mileage before the cover came off as most needed new headgaskets before then. I buy an inclusive kit each year of filters and plugs for about £30 and change the plugs every other year which for me is around 12 000 miles.

I changed mine at 45k and I think that they would have gone for another 10k as the were in good condition

Tend to do mine when I get a car so I KNOW how old they are. Am thinking that my VVC could do with new coils possibly as it won't hitt he red line. Limiter seems to come in at 6800 or there abouts. New leads helped it get there so coils might be old after all it is a 97 model.

Supposed to be 60,000 miles for platinum plugs, false economy in my opinion to just change one, i would have changed the whole set. Never heard of NLP plugs, did you mean NGK ?? best ones in my opinion. usually one of the coil packs that causes misfire.

Yes, 'NLP', I'd never heard of them either.!

And yes, I did change the complete set - nice new NGKs in there now!

Only had the TF since the Spring and covered about 3,000 miles sice then. There was a UK main dealer service less than 1,000 miles before that, so this year was a bit of a wait-and-see year. With very little mileage expected over the Wnter I would probably have changed the plugs as a precaution as part of a thorough service next Spring, but I'll probably change them every couple of years (approx 6,000 miles) now.

I suspected the coil packs at first, but switching them over the missfire stayed on 3. Put No 3 plug into No.2 and the missfire followed it... New set of NGKs and no missfire and no error codes in the ECU (found the Torque app on my Tablet very useful!)

NLP100290 is the number on the box of the new plug infront of me which came from perrys the MG/Rover specialist. Now I don't know whom actually makes them but some how doubt Perrys would risk their reputation selling duff plugs.

A quick Google seems to show that NLPs are original equipment - but I'd never heard of them before!
Happy with the new NGKs, which seem crisp and also seem to have cured a slight hesitation from cold.
