Anyone added a passanger airbag. 9 years 5 months ago #152332

I'm no expert ofc but i took to google to see what i could find to help. Apart from some discussion about expiry dates on airbags (jury seem's to be out on whether it's important or not), the only other thing i could find of potential use was this:

retro fitting aorbags is not necessarily a good thing as you will need the diagnostics to "turn on" the bag in the DCU and as a retro fit, you may not be able to guarantee it's functionability and effectiveness.

hope that helps

Cheers Denial, I have a pscan which should be able to access the SRS ECU but as they are different for the single and twin airbag cars I suspect that isn't an issue anyway.

I've fitted a passenger air bag but have not been able to clear the SRS fault light with the bag connected (currently not connected) despite trying a different ECU that appeared to be correct for twin bags. I'm hoping that I will be able to sort this with my newly arrived pscan kit.

Some comments: can you get the ECU from your scappy? It fits under the central console. Wiring should be in place. There should be a brace with the air bag - mine didn't have one so I made one. Lastly, do disconnect the battery and leave it so for 20 mins before working on the SRS.

PS the Rover life for bags is 15 years. Not sure how they derived this figure.

I installed a passenger airbag on my 1997 VVC. The wiring was in place but I did have to add the proper SRS ECU.
No programming was required. I do have a Blackbox diagnostic system that can do the job but it wasn't required.
Just get all the associated bits from your scrapper.

Cheers Richard - getting the bits from the one car more or less guarantee that they should work together.

The official line from MGR is to disconnect the battery for 10 minutes, I tend to just ensure the ignition has been off for at least this length of time.

Thanks Rich, I assume that the shopping list is
1) Airbag
2) Brace
3) SRS ECU

That should do it James. Might be worth taking a peek under the dash to make sure the harness is in place.

Funny, the passenger airbag is one of those things you hope never to use but it sure makes my wife happy that it's there on the rare occasions she agrees to ride in the MGF. I find it baffling that it was an option rather than standard equipment.

My 96 F was fitted with a passenger Air Bag from new, I presume the previous owner ordered it as a factory extra.

I understood that it was an additional ECU that had to be fitted to control the passenger air bag.

Not additional, just different. There is only one plug for the ECU. Trying to find the right ECU isn't totally straightforward as there are more than 2 part numbers out there. Part of me feels that they may all be the same just with one preprogrammed for 1 bag and the other for 2 but until I sort my own installation it's only a theory....certainly changing the ECU alone to one I was assured had come off a 2 bag car didn't solve my issue. There is some chat on .org which says you need a T4 intervention and I'm hoping that the pecan will be able to do the same.....when I have some time.

James you are right that it's 10 minutes but I'd still disconnect the battery (as per the manual). There are lots of live circuits that don't go via the ignition switch.

So I popped the cover off in our car, can't see any spare plugs so I guess I'll get the loom out of the other car as well.

The wires in my car were tucked well out of the way on one of the dashboard bracing bars.
