Exhausted!! 9 years 6 months ago #151156

Hi all, I could do with some advice. I recently visited my local garage for a service on my mgtf vvc 2003 model. My helpful mechanic advised me that my exhaust is blowing. After making some enquiries he informed me that Rogers (the local MG stockist) could put one on back order for me but a) couldn't tell me when to expect it in ........ if ever! and b) would cost about £600!!. What I would like to know is if I need to buy a whole exhaust system or can bits of it be replaced individually and also if there is a cheaper but still as good option for me. Many many thanks in advance of all your invaluable help and advice :broon:

I'm sure that a stainless steel exhaust with a lifelong guarantee could be had at around the same price as, or even less, than that. Click here and fill out an enquiry form.

Alternatively, there's always ebay. Click, click.

I would also ask kwikfit for a quote and shop around elsewhere too. :yesnod:

Yes, you can usually replace it in parts. It's unusual for the whole thing to need replacing all at once. Although, that's not a bad idea if it's rotten.

Actually, the guys in the first link are here on ebay. Not a bad deal at all.

Hi Micheala.
First of all I would take very little notice of your "helpful mechanic" if this is his advice!
The Exhaust system on a MGTF consists of four bits: The back box, with the two exhaust ends you see when you look at the rear; the catalytic convertor which is immediately behind this; the flexible part, and finally the Manifold, which is where it joins on to the engine.
Any one of these joints could be blowing, as could the back box or the flexible pipe.
The first part therefore is to establish where your exhaust is blowing, and whether tightening up a joint will fix it. Only then do you need to look at buying spare parts!
Hope this helps!

John

Invalid or non-existent item ID.Links to some e-bay parts:

Back Box (non stainless steel) eBay item number:
Replacement Exhaust Rear Back Box Silencer 2 Year Warranty - Brand New!
Completed

Front Down Pipe with Flexible bit

Hope that gives you the clue that you should not be talking about £600!

I was going to say exactly what has already been posted, I would suspect that it is the flexible part of the front pipe, which is a common failure. all parts can be sourced separately , there is no way that this should cost anywhere near £600.

Just read your post again, your so called ''helpful mechanic'' is talking utter rubbish, you can obtain exhaust parts for a TF from many suppliers on next day delivery, Brown & Gammons, MGOC, Rimmers, Sussex Classic Car Parts and many others as well as numerous suppliers of exhausts on ebay. Rogers MG need to get their act together too.

I had a blow on my exhaust. Used some steel cement to cure it.

Then swapped the downpipe for a stainless one and a secondhand stainless backbox.

Total Costs..

Exhaust £150
Downpipe £40
Fitting Kit £10

About a few hours work for an amateur person with an angle grinder and basic tools.

Was a good time had by all :)
