Hi everyone,

First time posting in a forum so please excuse any stupidity. I have a MG TF 2002 135 basic model. It has done 40k on the clock and has never had the head gasket done but has got full stamped service history.

When I am driving and my foot comes off the accelerator it is fine, however If i go over a bump or a dent in the road when I am not accelerating I get an awful random knock coming from behind me. It 'feels' like something might be loose because the knocking is so random.

Has anyone had this problem? Or anything I can do to prevent this?

You need to get the back end up on a pair of axle stands, have a good pull and push on the road wheels if you think its suspension related; it could be one of the engine mountings or even one of the hanging brackets or rubber mounts on the exhaust.

Check it over the sooner the better as it may be safety related or cause some consequential damage.

As above, it could be so many things, major or minor.
From subframe mounts, suspension bushes etc. all the way to the locking key for the wheels rattling in the boot.
You're going to have to get out and get under...

Does it do it when you go over rough ground? I had the same and it was the rear compliance bushes. As I didn't have the time to fix them (and the MOT was fine with them as they are) I just made up some big spacers/washers from an old Ikea chopping board to go between the suspension arm and the bush - noise gone!

I think if it was an engine mount it would knock on acceleration/deceleration.
