Is'nt it so that the TF has only got a passenger airbag if the the lid has the SRS sign? No sign no airbag. Is it possible to install a passenger airbag? What about the wirering. Can it just be plugged in or do I need a hole new wirering? :drive:

In the F & TF if its a blank panel, then no airbag! the airbag module will have SRS in the bottom left hand corner . I understand that you can retro fit one , you need the airbag module , the controller unit and the additional wiring harness. not a cheap job.

It can be cheap. The complete rig is often on E-Bay, usually around 50 Quid. If you happen to have an unpopular colour interior new airbags are available cheap. Unfortunately Ash Grey isn't. :pinch:
The wiring may already be in place, strapped onto the crossmember above the glovebox. It's worth removing the blanking plate to check.
It's not difficult to install, particularly if you have a Mk1 MGF as you can unscrew the control unit after popping out the switch panel. Later cars require removing the console insert for access, but it's still not a particularly difficult job.

The physical fitting is straightforward and the wiring should be in place. However, you need a reprogramming to get the ECU to see the bag....I've even tried different ECUs with no success.....the. red SRS light stays on with the bag connected. Mine is disconnected and I'm hoping my kick starter diagnostics will allow me to sort this out.

Odd, Mine worked perfectly without reprogramming. I did swap for the correct control unit as well as adding the passenger bag. It was plug and play.

I believe some units are pre-setup for the additional safety bag, some aren't. So it's pot luck!

When I bought my 'F' last year I didn't realise that the SRS light was covered over. Upon removing the instrument panel (to do another job) I discovered black tape covering the light. After I removed this tape, the light was on (surprise surprise!) :bang: I tried to fix it myself, changing the connections under the seats, checking the pre tensioner connections, new horn ring and new SRS ECU. It took a trip to a Rover specialist to diagnose the problem. After disconnecting the passenger airbag, the SRS light behaved as it should. Obviously my car from new, never had a passenger airbag and someone decided to add one without changing the ECU. The garage's theory was that the ECU was programmed on the production line and that if I wanted to reinstate the airbag I should make sure that the ECU came out of a car with twin airbags.
