Temperature issues/ speedo issues 9 years 8 months ago #147434

welcome quaswold,

1) check temp sender connection and resistance of sender itself in engine bay. someone will know there exact location and picture.
2) factory fit ambient temp was three lamps i believe not a gauge (anyone else on this?) most likely the sender under the front bumper being duff or connection faulty.
3) the mk1 had a multi section speedo cable, the rear part to the gearbox often fails first, if this happens, speedo fails then EPAS cannot receive a speed signal so cuts the system.

hope this helps as a starter for ten :)

Hi and welcome

Yeah, EPAS wont work if the speedo isn't.
I've never seen an ambient temp gauge, are you talking about the oil temp gauge on the left side of the clock?

Hi, and welcome to the T Bar, I have the same issue with the speedo cable (the rear part). The cheapest I could find on flea bay was £40. Can you post the link to the company offering for £30 or was it a one off?
Cheers, Billy

It consists of 2 small rectangular LEDs (1 green,1 red) mounted in a small round holder, a ECU and a sensor.
The green light comes on above 5˚C for a few seconds when starting the car to show it's working.
When both lights come on the temp is between 5˚C and 2˚C.
When only the red light is on the temp is below 2˚C.

My car has it fitted (must be a pretty rare OEM accessory here in Oz)

Must be pretty rare - full stop, mate. I've never come across an ambient temp system on them before. :nonod:
I agree that it would be much more useful over here than Oz. A photo would be good for future reference.:yesnod:

Referring to the original question, the temp gauge(engine) is fed from a sensor on the engine coolant outlet pipe. Removing the plug and bridging the connections should give full scale detection. (ign on) This will identify if it's the sensor or gauge and wiring fault.

I might take some happy snaps tomoz.
It's not as silly to have one here as you might think.
In the Sth East parts of the country in can get cold, maybe not what you lot would call cold, but quite cold enough, thanks!

In the states of Tasmania, Victoria, the southern parts of New South Wales and the Australian Capitol Territory it can often get to below 0˚C in winter, and to have a warning of icey conditions makes sense as most drivers here would have little experience of driving in such conditions so are probably more likely to get caught out.

Yeah, someone posted a photo of a snowy scene in Oz somewhere. We tend to forget just how big Australia is, and assume it's all a hot dry climate.
Judging by how British drivers are nonplussed by a bit of ice on the road, and that happens every year here, then it could be carnage where it is an unusual circumstance!
