Alloy refurbs - pitfalls and prices? 10 years 1 week ago #141610

I've bought really?'s set of 16 inch 6 spokes with nearly new Proxies (or is that Proxy's?). They would look better with a refurb and a local firm does an acid bath, shot blast and repaint service that comes highly recommended. What's the experience out there of having this done? Any smart questions to ask? How much would you expect to pay for a set including tyre removal and refit?

Grateful for any advice. I expect by the time I'm done I would be able to advertise a set of refurbished wheels and nearly new tyres with free sports car attached!

Hi Richard,
I had mine done a month or so ago by these guys...
http://www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk/locations/wheelrefurbishmenteastgrinstead-sussex/
They did a superb job on 4 wheels for £312 inc...which was the price for me driving in, having the work done, and driving out again..I actually removed the wheels myself and took them up there in my Defender and they took 2 days..fitted and re-balanced afterwards...

Gunmetal grey instead of matt/satin black...Nice job I thought...!

Thanks for that....have shown the local franchise of the same firm the wheels and they've quoted £280 inclusive VAT .

Richard

That's a great deal...they must have seen me coming or thought I was a banker or something...

My soft top isn't shiny any more...it only acquires shiny-ness in the winter months coz I'm a southern softy! :yesnod:

I'm in the market myself for a refurb.
I'm off to PX wheels in Blackpool, they did the wheels on my F a few years back and they stayed pristine for the four years I had my F.
I'm getting my 11 spokes done for £250 tyres off stripped blasted filled powder coated etc etc and I know the finish is like new and will last.
Here's a snap of my Square spokes.

The car and wheels look great
Though £312 seems a bit steep. I'd be tempted to buy new and sell the old ones on.
I had a quote on refurbishing my mini wheels that came in at £55 per wheel including diamond cut on the outer edge. Problem was I could buy the same wheels new for 45 each!

Having used many companies in the past, City Powder Coating is simply THE BEST: Chemical strip, sandblast, powder coat and lacquer. They also offer same day, drive in, drive out service;

http://www.citypowdercoating.co.uk/

Value: £20 per wheel or £30 to remove the tyre, refit with new valve and rebalance

A great price but unfortunately hundreds of miles away and a 2 way courier adds £120 because of my post code!

I did Meg's a few years back:

Good job Adam but the ones I have are much worse than yours were and need an acid bath and shot blast. I wouldn't be able to get a good finish at home.

Thanks for all the inputs. I'm dropping the wheels today with the local wheel specialist and will post some before & after pics when I get them back.
