Fitting a new horn 10 years 2 months ago #136853

Happy New Year everyone.
Ok, this has got me buggered.
My 04 160 only has the meet keep horn fitted due to MG's cost cutting which I reckon won't save them.
I've tried to fit a duel set of Bosch horns to no avail. No power to the horns, but the OEM works fine when reconnected.
I've then tried to fit a Steible magnum to no avail. Then the OEM horn also works when refitted.
I'm using a relay with the following wiring as per the instruction slip included with both horns.
Relay Pin 87 to the new horn
Relay Pin 86 to the OEM MG Horn button wire
Relay Pin 30 to the battery positive post
Relay pin 85 to earth on the car body.
What am I doing wrong here?

I need to ad that if I wire directly to the car horn loom, the Steible works perfectly, but I'm concerned re not using the relay.
Can I safely use the Steible without the relay?

Thanks for any advice and best wishes all.

Horns are often "always live", that is the horn button earths them to ground when pressed.
So in the case of an "always live" circuit, if pin # 30 was connected to earth and the connections to: pins # 85 and # 86 were swapped over it would work.
I don't have the wiring diagrams for your model as I only have them for mine, so I can't look it up for you but maybe someone here who has the correct diagram for your car, could check it out for you?

HI
I also bought a set of two horns but I just put them on with no relay as you do not need a relay as you only press the horn for 1-2 seconds
If i remenber my 04 had two connectors but one horn

Not sure about a 04 160, but an 02 135 already uses a fused relay to feed the horn, so it is quite safe just to wire a new horn in as a direct replacement for the old one.

However if the fuse blows, then the horn is too powerful for the wiring, and an additional relay will be required.

Thanks fellas. I'll view the horn as already connected to a relay via the Pektron but will try Cobbers suggestion of reversing the relay power as my horns are always on when the power is switched off.
As an aside, the 04 160 is only wired for one horn from the facory ( on my April 04 build car)
I'll advise the group how I go.
Thanks again everyone.

Our 04 135 was only wired for one horn from the factory as well.

I simply snipped the wires feeding the existing horn and added another horn after a very kind gift of another from a certain forum member.

Rich needed it for that song he plays loud.

"I'm horny! horny horny horny.
So horny I'm horny horny horny tonight.
I'm horny all night long.
I'm horny all night long."

Well that's what his neighbour said anyway he's got fed up of hearing it...
