Today's stupid question. 9 years 8 months ago #147371

Had my MGF for just over a year, and in all that time the oil temp gauge has never gone above the second mark on the gauge. Is this normal, or my MG a freak !?

Today I have been down to the south coast, for a blast along nice quick A roads ( apart from when some Herbert, or herbertess, in a huge 37 litre 4X4 dives along the road. Never going above 40. Totally oblivious to the sodding great queue of traffic behind them. Even tractor drivers getting pi##ed off )

But the oil temp never moved. :drive:

Bit of a pointless guage imho.

Should've been an oil pressure guage or a volt meter.

Stupidest question was asked by someone interested in my car when it was for sale.

Showing them the boot and engine.

"If that's the engine in there what's up front?"

Mine barely goes above the first mark 60 deg C, really hot and it goes to about 90, never higher!!

It is common on all MGFs , you are not alone - many owners think it is pressure and get worried!

Maybe someone could make a combined gauge?

A volt/oil pressure/oil temp/tire tread depth/numpty driver distance gauge.

Eh? What?!? My oil temp gauge runs up to about 120 indicated when it's warmed up. Stays fairly steady at that though. Is mine borked?

No, don't worry.
The oil temp gauge was fitted because it was fractionally cheaper than an oil pressure gauge. It 'indicates' rather than shows the temp. ie Not accurate.
There was a run of cars where the oil temp seemed to read high and they found it was just the sensor being slightly more sensitive than previous versions. The fix was to put a resistor in the circuit to get a lower reading!

Only worry if the gauge starts showing abnormal readings ie not whatever is 'normal' for your car.

It's not a totally useless gauge as it helps me to constrain my driving until it's started to move off the stops.
