When I lifted the rear of the hood I was reminded what a sad state the foam seal was in! Disgusting!

I decided to replace this mess, but didn't want to use the same material as I thought it would deteriorate in a similar manner. I found some VELCRO in the local DIY store (the packaging was damaged and it was going cheap!)and so I thought that the loop side would be perfect to replace the foam seal.

The first thing was to remove the old seal. I used a chisel to scrape the remnants off the metal.

You will be left with the adhesive to remove, and I used some spray adhesive remover to clean it off, Leaving you with this.

I rubbed the metalwork down and sprayed it with black paint, to tidy it up.

When the paint had dried, I applied a coating of contact adhesive to the metal.

When the adhesive was tacky I began to apply the velcro tape.

Definitely an improvement, and I hope the velcro will last better than the original foam.

Well I wish I knew about the T Bar 12 months ago when I replaced the seal on my soft top.

Bought the replacement foam from Rimmers & was hellish expensive for what it is.

Soon after found a similar product in ScrewFix for a fraction of the cost

As they say hind sight is a wonderful thing, lesson learnt - dont just jump in until researched the subject.

This is on my list of jobs to do when I get a dry spell of weather. I have been looking for a suitable alternative to the foam strip and wandered if the Velcro has stood up to the test of time seeing that David had originally installed it over six years ago.

That's great David, Thank you. Definitely an improvement on foam rubber. I will get enough for both the Tf and the F, better not do one and not the other.

What I have used some years ago is some self-expanding (but compressed delivered) band of foam as used for buildings (like seal a window). This is available in various sizes, the thinnest is 1-3mm thick (1compressed, 3expanded).

Please make sure you open the 'wheel' with the band just shortly before using, or it will be already expanded.

regards,
kai
